Paul Swale - Managing Director

Paul has a wide-ranging background and experience within the Mining Industry, Security (Maritime and Land), Law Enforcement, Military, Emergency Management and Health & Safety.

Paul has been working, providing advice and training in austere, and remote locations worldwide.

Paul has established and implemented a range of Crisis, Emergency, Security, Aerodrome and Safety Management processes across multi-jurisdictional bodies in various industries and in a number of challenging countries. These include the Middle East, Paupa New Guinea, East African nations, Latin American nations, New Zealand and Australia. He has facilitated and co-ordinated with various government authorities; and in each country, the local community bodies during escalating incidents.

Paul holds an Australian Advanced Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, is a qualified Lead Auditor in Health & Safety and Security Management, holds the International Shipping and Port Security certification, has a Diploma in New Zealand Policing, has completed the Australian Cert III in Mining Emergency Response 3 times, and received a Commendation for his time with the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in the Middle East.


Natalie Hall - Operations Manager

Natalie provides operational management support to our experienced team. She comes from a background in facility management, which includes finance, animal care and project management, she keeps our team of ex soldiers, sailors, policemen, firemen and qualified professionals in order.  In her spare time she manages a Vet Clinic in the Waikato.

Natalie received a distinction in her Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management, she has a Diploma in Veterinary Nursing and holds numerous other certifications in Business Management. 


James (Tony) Hill - Principal Consultant

Tony is a retired NZDF Colonel with a background in high risk activities such as mixed gas construction diving, explosive demolitions (land and underwater), landmine clearance as well as horizontal and vertical construction/destruction, and training.

He has operated and managed projects in extremely hostile environments such as Former Yugoslavia, Former USSR, Somalia, Yemen and Liberia. Tony has worked as a New Zealand Defense Attaché providing advice to the NZ Government, providing direction on defence relationships, maximising New Zealand’s security and broader interests. Tony has also represented the NZDF in Joint Operational Command Centers around the globe.

Tony holds a Masters degree in Integrated Logistics, a post graduate diploma in Defence and Strategic Studies, and is a qualified Lead Auditor and Health & Safety Consultant.


Hilary Wilson-Hill - Associate Consultant

With a background of more than 30 years in operations, business management and accounting across many industries, Hilary has many years experience living in a range of countries overseas and has worked in international freight forwarding, marketing, food industry publications, cold storage and manufacturing.  She is also a qualified Health & Safety consultant.


Simon Reynolds - Associate Consultant

Simon has spent most of his working life operating in hazardous environments where managing risk was critical to operational success. From Construction Diving and blasting in both Australia and NZ, to a career as an Engineer Officer in the NZ Army that provided him with multiple deployments to assist with mine clearance operations in developing countries.  

Simon has also been involved in leadership and event management roles with The Offlimits Charitable Trust. Funds raised by running NZ’s largest participant motorsport activity, Tussock Buster, support Soldiers’ health and wellbeing. Simon is also qualified as a Lead Auditor.


Brenton Harrison - Associate Consultant

Following a career with the New Zealand’s Fire Service, Brenton has been an outdoor educator, youth, personal and family development practitioner, team leader, guide, centre manager and business owner for the past 14 years.

With his extensive background in adventure activity and running his own business managing high risks through implementing robust systems and great training, he has the ability to facilitate a wide range of Health & Safety services across many industries.


Brett Amos - Associate Consultant

Brett is a Security Specialist, expert Trainer and former Police officer. Brett lead Crime Prevention operations and was instrumental in building relationships within communities, implementing initiatives which had proven results in crime reduction and community safety. Brett was known in the Bay of Plenty as a driving force in setting up and running community Patrols working extensively with Neighbourhood Watch groups. 

Brett worked in the Solomon Islands with the RAMSI Mission to provide expert advice and support in Police Operations. He later worked in Iraq with the British Foreign Office providing security advice. These roles have given Brett an excellent understanding of cultural issues and the need for different approaches for various situations.

He currently aids the Earthquake Commission and having to understand considerable amounts of technical information, negotiate with, and explain this, has him engaging with a wide range of stakeholders.

Brett is highly skilled in conflict resolution and holds the CDP (Conflict Dynamic Profile) Training Certification.  He is a Certified Trainer in Workplace Conflict Resolution by the Mediation Training Institute, St Petersburg, Florida.  Brett is also a Health and Safety Specialist and holds the ICAM investigations qualification.  


Ron Van Dillen - Associate Consultant

Ron has an extremely diversified experience with Health & Safety training and Security. His career has taken him through various roles such as the New Zealand Police Force, Investigator, Taranaki Rescue Helicopter Crewman and Safety Officer.

Ron has 14 years of experience in the New Zealand Police force including Armed Offenders Squad, Search & Rescue Squad and the Criminal Investigation Branch and has also worked with Fonterra with Fraud and Theft Investigations He spent time with the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter crew performing safety procedure pre-flight and inflight, aiding both pilot, paramedics and injured patients.

Ron spent some time working with the New Zealand Training Institute where he ran the NZQA Unit Standards towards Occupational Health & Safety RMG program, presenting OOS, Drugs in the Work Place, Hazard Control and Application of Risk Assessment Procedures in the Work Place.


Shaun Dickie - Associate Consultant

Shaun has an extremely varied and in-depth background in Health, Safety and Emergency Management. His career has seen him in various roles such as Station Commander, Paramedic, Consultant, Safety Specialist and Trainer.

Shaun’s career has seen him work in austere and remote environments within the Mining, Oil & Gas industries worldwide, from Canada, Australia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Papua New Guinea and in East Africa.

Shaun has developed and delivered training in compliance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Health Training (HLT) and the Public Safety Training Packages (Asia-Pacific PUA) to both full time and part time emergency response and management personnel throughout his career.


Matthew Gmelig - Associate Consultant

Originally an Intensive Care and Emergency nurse, Matt moved into preventative health as an Occupational Hygienist, Work Health & Safety (WH&S) and Emergency Response Consultant.

His varied work career means he offers more than just a theoretical answer to any Health and Safety issue.  Matt has worked in a number of remote and central locations across Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and in the Middle East. Matt has a Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hygiene and Toxicology, is a qualified Asbestos Assessor and is a Cert III Mining Emergency Response Trainer.

From training to asbestos identification and WH&S consulting, Matt can provide a complete risk profile to your team.


John Snooks - Associate Consultant

John has many years experience with large scale asbestos projects. He is accredited to the National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia (NATA) and operates an ISO accredited laboratory for asbestos testing and air monitoring.

John and his team perform asbestos inspections on a weekly basis from small residential properties to large industrial sites. 

John has a Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hygiene, Masters in Occupational Health and Safety and Bachelor of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Science.

John delivers Asbestos Management programmes to an extremely high standard.

Phil Swanson - Associate Consultant

Phil has been involved in Public Safety for over 20 years, from Policing as a defensive tactics (Armed and Un-armed) instructor to providing situational awareness and conflict resolution training to corporation's, he is a well respected and experienced trainer in this field. Phil has a unique teaching style that resonates extremely well with participants

He has spent time in austere and remote environments around the globe, providing his services to a wide range of clients prior to joining our team. 
 
Additionally, and due to his qualifications in construction and engineering, Phil is able to work across a wide range of industries. He is also Certified in Health & Safety, Building Compliance and Investigation. Post Christchurch earthquakes, Phil worked heavily with the Earthquake Commission during the recovery programme as a Quality Assurance and H&S Assessor.

Phil uses a pragmatic approach to providing solutions and services, and when engaging with course participants.

Mark Griffiths - Associate Security Consultant (UK)

Mark is a consummate and reliable executive security management professional with a strong track record in security operations and project management within a number of highly competitive environments.

Mark has proven success in identifying opportunities for improvement and developing profitable, efficiency-focused policies and programs, resulting in performance enhancement.

Mark is an ex Royal Navy Clearance EOD / IED expert, who possess a comprehensive background in government contracting, conflict resolution, asset protection and project management derived from conducting domestic and global operations in Pakistan, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Afghanistan. 

Mark is a remarkable leader who; positively directs, mentors, trains, and manages, culturally diverse and success-driven teams of qualified personnel.


Jim Kayes - Associate Consultant

Jim Kayes is an award winning journalist with more than 25 years experience across all forms of the media having worked in newspapers at the Waikato Times, Evening Post, Dominion and Dominion Post; online with stuff.co.nz and newshub.co.nz; in radio with RadioLive; and on television with TV3/Newshub and Sky TV.

He was part of the highly successful Paul Henry breakfast show on TV3 and RadioLive, and is a familiar face on Sky Sport and voice on RadioLive.

Jim has also worked in a media advisory capacity for, among others, FINA, World Squash, Waterpolo New Zealand and All Blacks Tours - for whom he is also their brand ambassador.

He is a skilled media advisor with an excellent understanding of modern media, and is adept at preventative media action and conflict resolution.
